Gateway to the Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site
Located in the heart of Cefn Mawr, The Holly Bush Inn is a historic and much-loved pub with deep ties to the local community and the industrial heritage of North Wales. Established in 1800, during the construction of the iconic Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, the pub is one of the oldest in the area and continues to serve as a welcoming social hub for both locals and visitors.
With a prime position at the centre of the Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site, the Holly Bush Inn offers more than just great beer and friendly service. It provides a base for heritage tourism and community initiatives, and is home to both the Plas Kynaston Canal Group and the Plas Kynaston Canal & Railway Company — organisations dedicated to the regeneration and reconnection of Cefn Mawr with the surrounding World Heritage attractions.
In recent years, the pub has undergone a series of renovations since being taken over from the brewery in 2013. These efforts have restored its character while breathing new life into the building, making it a focal point for grassroots development and sustainable tourism efforts.
Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Cefn Viaduct, Dee Valley, and beyond from the pub’s viewpoint platform, while soaking in the rich history of the building and the village itself. Open seven days a week from 11am to 11pm, The Holly Bush Inn also sponsors Cefn Albion Football Club, supports local music through plans for recording studios, and is committed to promoting local food, culture, and community cohesion.
