The Plas Kynaston Canal Group (PKC Group) is a community-led organisation based in Cefn Mawr, North Wales, working to restore and regenerate the village through sustainable tourism, heritage preservation, and grassroots development. Founded with a clear aim to reconnect Cefn Mawr to the surrounding tourism infrastructure, the group continues to campaign for long-term investment that aligns with Welsh Government planning policies and the Well-being of Future Generations Act.
Operating from their base at the historic Holly Bush Inn, the PKC Group hosts regular public meetings, held on the second Tuesday of each month, where locals are invited to share ideas and contribute to plans that aim to revitalise the area. One of the group's most well-known initiatives is the effort to reopen The Old Bookies in the centre of Cefn, a project currently on hold due to financial constraints but still very much part of their vision to boost footfall and community pride.
Over the years, the group has played an active role in public consultations with Wrexham County Borough Council, Arcadis, and other regional stakeholders—consistently advocating for Cefn Mawr to be recognised and included in wider regeneration efforts. The PKC Group also supports infrastructure improvements like better visitor signage, public transport links, and the development of the Ebenezer as a local Arts and Visitor Centre.
Their long-term goal is clear: to turn Cefn Mawr into a thriving hub for sustainable tourism, making the most of its location within the Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site Corridor. With its proximity to attractions like Ty Mawr Country Park, the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, and direct transport links to cities like Liverpool, Manchester, and Birmingham, the group believes that Cefn Mawr holds untapped potential that could transform the local economy.
Backed by community support and driven by passionate volunteers, the Plas Kynaston Canal Group continues to push for a future where Cefn Mawr’s heritage and economic opportunities are fully realised—for the benefit of residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
